Washing your hands frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds is one of the most important prevention measures against COVID-19.
However, it’s not always feasible.
Maybe you’re shopping for groceries and there are no washrooms nearby.
Maybe the line to the washroom is a loooonnngggg one, full of health-conscious people like you.
Or maybe you’re just preoccupied with so many other things and have simply forgotten about proper hand washing practices. Hey, it happens to the best of us!
In cases where you don’t have access to soap and water, the next best thing is to use an alcohol-based handrub that contains at least 60% alcohol. When used correctly, properly-formulated hand sanitizers can effectively inactivate many types of microbes, including the coronavirus.
That being said, these handy sanitizers are not flawless.
I’ve seen and heard many people complaining that the large amount of alcohol has caused their hands to become dry and cracked over time.
Now, this is where Graydon Skincare comes in...
Our light-as-air Nourishing Hand Sanitizer deeply cleanses your hands on-the-go. It's formulated with a blend of ultra-nourishing ingredients like British Columbia glacial water, superfood ingredients and a Health Canada approved concentration of 72% ethyl alcohol. It will protect your hands against 99.99% of bacteria and germs while also fortifying your skin barrier with deep hydration to prevent dry, cracked hands.
Being a relatively new product in the Graydon Skincare lineup, I’ve received many questions about it. Below are the most common questions that people have about our Nourishing Hand Sanitizer.
Why did we formulate this hand sanitizer with alcohol?
There are 2 types of hand sanitizers: Alcohol-free formulas and alcohol-based formulas.
Many people have raised concerns over the alcohol-free hand sanitizers due to the types of chemicals used in those formulas.
Research suggests that some popular antimicrobial ingredients in alcohol-free formulas, like triclosan, may negatively impact the endocrine system—such as the thyroxine hormone responsible for digestion, heart and muscle function, brain development, and maintenance of bones. Not to mention, triclosan may also have a negative impact on the environment once it reaches the sewage system. Lastly, these disinfectants and antimicrobials may also contribute to microbes developing improved resistance to the ingredients.
Understanding that health is a top concern right now, we’ve chosen to go with an alcohol-based formula to give you that peace of mind. How do I properly use a hand sanitizer to protect myself and my loved ones?
Not only is the type of hand sanitizer you use important, it’s also important to use hand sanitizer correctly to get the proper level of protection you need.
For proper use, rub Nourishing Hand Sanitizer thoroughly over your hands and fingers for 30 seconds and let them air-dry. And just like with hand washing, you need to use it after coming into contact with a sick person; after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose; after touching high-touch surfaces such as laptops or doorknobs; before eating; and, of course, after using the bathroom.
What makes this hand sanitizer special?
It’s the fact that we don’t compromise.
When we set out to formulate this product, our intention was to create a hand sanitizer that actually gives you the protection you need, without trading off the cosmetic elegance of the formula. Meaning, we want it to work and we want you to enjoy using it!
We’ve followed the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended formula, which states that a hand sanitizer formula needs to include at least 60% alcohol and the alcohol needs to either be ethanol 96% or isopropyl alcohol 99.8% (our formula contains 72% of ethyl alcohol). The formula also needs to include hydrogen peroxide 3%—an antiseptic. Together, these ingredients will reduce the amount of bacteria, fungi and viruses on your hands.
Typically, heavy use of alcohol-based formulas can easily lead to your hands becoming dry and cracked. That’s not the case with our Nourishing Hand Sanitizer. We’ve made sure to include ultra-hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, aloe vera and sea silt extract. Our plant-based complex will delight your skin with a cooling sensation while calming and soothing any irritation that may come with increased hand washing.
What are the unique ingredients in this hand sanitizer?
Sea silt extract: A mineral-rich marine ingredient derived from glacial oceanic clay in British Columbia. Providing a rich source of oxygen, purifying clay, sulphur, salts and minerals, sea silt extract strengthens the skin barrier function and provides it with intense hydration.
Blueberry extract: With its potent antioxidant properties, this seed extract helps to protect your skin from the detrimental effects of free radicals. Particularly, the type of blueberry seed oil we use can fight against the damaging effects of blue light.
Calendula: Due to its saponin and mucilage content, calendula has some heavy-hitting moisturizing properties. It also has anti-irritant properties, which helps to calm and soothe irritated skin and conditions such as eczema.
Lavender oil: With high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, lavender oil can help reduce inflammation, fight free radicals and its aroma can act as a form of aromatherapy to relieve anxiety.
What does it smell like?
This is a very important question because aroma can be a HUGE factor for people when it comes to skincare products. Some people can’t stand products with strong scents, while others don’t really care, as long as the products work.
Our Nourishing Hand Sanitizer has a bright and uplifting citrus aroma that comes from essential oil. In addition to providing that classic clean smell, the essential oil also has antibacterial properties.
