From What you need to know about hyperpigmentation: Top skincare products, according to a doctor by Farah Khan featuring Dr. Pam Kapend for The Province:
"What should you look for in skincare products to effectively treat pigmentation issues?
Consider two types of ingredients: main and adjunct ingredients to combat hyperpigmentation.
The main ingredients include hydroquinone, retinoids and cysteamine. However, Kapend notes that hydroquinone should not be used long-term and cysteamine is a safer, long-term alternative.
'These are the holy grails in reversing hyperpigmented lesions backed by substantial evidence in well-conducted studies,' she said.
Whereas adjunct ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids are great for long-term use.
'These are fantastic ingredients that can be used long term as maintenance in controlling melanin production,' she said. 'They can safely be used long term.'"
