"What should you look for in skincare products to effectively treat pigmentation issues?

Consider two types of ingredients: main and adjunct ingredients to combat hyperpigmentation.

The main ingredients include hydroquinone, retinoids and cysteamine. However, Kapend notes that hydroquinone should not be used long-term and cysteamine is a safer, long-term alternative.

'These are the holy grails in reversing hyperpigmented lesions backed by substantial evidence in well-conducted studies,' she said.

Whereas adjunct ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids are great for long-term use.

'These are fantastic ingredients that can be used long term as maintenance in controlling melanin production,' she said. 'They can safely be used long term.'"
