Here's What the Vitamins in Your Skincare Do

You know they're good for you, but why do they matter in your skincare? We break it down in this article.

Moon Boost is our brightening multivitamin serum, and while many of us have a pretty decent understanding of what the vitamins we consume do—whether through our meals or through taking them in pill or liquid form—it isn’t quite as clear why your skin needs vitamins.

At face value, I’m sure you’d accept that vitamins are good for your skin (it just sounds true, doesn’t it? And it is! It’s scientifically proven) but in this article, we wanted to dive in and explain why they matter so you have a better knowledge of how your skincare is working for you.

P.S. We’re focusing on the vitamins in Moon Boost serum. Moon Boost delivers visibly brighter, firmer, and plumper skin. It’s also dermatologist tested clinically proven and for sensitive skin. With its multivitamin approach, Moon Boost supports your skin’s overall health and longevity so you can feel good and age better.

Let’s explore the wonderful world of vitamins in skincare!

Vitamin A

If you’ve heard about one of skincare’s most popular ingredients—retinol—then you already know a lot more about vitamin A than you think!

Why? Retinol is a retinoid, a type of ingredient that is derived from vitamin A.

That’s why, just like retinol, vitamin A helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by speeding up cell renewal and boosting collagen production.

Cell renewal is the journey of new skin cells making their way from the bottom to the top of your epidermis, where it then gets sloughed off and replaced. This is a process that naturally slows down as we age. Luckily, vitamin A can speed it up! As a result of this process, your skin’s tone and texture are smoothed out.

Vitamin A also helps to boost collagen production—something that also slows down as we get older. Collagen is one of the proteins that keeps your skin looking plump and supple. Increased collagen helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals and minimize skin damage caused by environmental stressors such as UV rays and pollution.

Vitamin C also works to even the complexion by reducing melanin production and fading hyperpigmentation. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm redness associated with some skin conditions. If that’s not enough, vitamin C has also been shown to increase collagen production (see vitamin A section for more info on collagen production).

At Graydon Skincare, we use our fair share of vitamin C alternatives because some people with reactive skin have trouble with vitamin C from L-ascorbic acid (the most common in skincare formulas). We’re also using THD, a gentle, oil-soluble derivative of vitamin C that works just as well as L-ascorbic acid without the irritation.

Vitamin D

Our primary source of Vitamin D comes from the sun, hence the nickname “the sunshine vitamin.”

This essential vitamin is synthesized in our skin and plays an important role in the way our bodies function.

In skincare, Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties that are known to help with some skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. In addition, it’s been shown to normalize skin cell turnover, which helps to maintain the skin barrier function. It can also help with skin firmness and elasticity.

But that’s not all! Studies show that vitamin D provides some protection from damage caused by UVB rays, and less sun damage means better health and longevity for your skin. Now let me be very clear—you still need to wear an SPF!

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a staple ingredient that has been used in skincare products for decades.

So what makes vitamin E a go-to ingredient? Well, it’s a fat-soluble vitamin that helps to reinforce the skin barrier and soothe skin that has been exposed to the elements. It also works great as a moisturizer since it can help improve skin hydration.

On top of that, it has powerful antioxidant properties that work to protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors. This damage is what can age your skin by slowing down processes like cell turnover, elastic production, and collagen production.

P.S. Vitamin E is also known as tocopherol. Now you know when you see it in an ingredient list!

Vitamin F

Vitamin F is actually not a vitamin. Instead, it’s the term used to describe two essential fatty acids—alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6).

In the 20s, scientists originally thought the two fatty acids were a new vitamin they had discovered—though we know now that’s not true, the name has stuck around!

Vitamin F is a powerful moisturizing ingredient that helps to reduce Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and improve skin elasticity, firmness and texture. It also offers some protection against the damaging effects of UVB rays, collagen loss, and the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin F is also good for acne and oily skin because both fatty acids regulate sebum production.

Vitamin K

While not as widely talked about as other skincare ingredients, vitamin K does have some amazing benefits to offer.

For starters, vitamin K helps to speed wound healing by reducing the size of the wound and forming collagen fibres and blood vessels.

It also plays a major role in blood circulation and clotting, which leads researchers to believe that vitamin K can help reduce the appearance of bruising and dark circles—particularly under the eyes.
