Harnessing the function of Collagen with Supermoon Serum

One of the many unique ingredients included in Supermoon Serum is an extract from African Mahogany Bark (Khaya Senegalensis Bark Extract) which is known to enhance collagen production.

What is African Mahogany Bark Extract?

Research has shown that African Mahogany Bark Extract stimulates collagen XVIII synthesis at the dermal-epidermal junction and in the basement membrane of adipose cells that provide structure and integrity to the skin.

This means that this extract has action on both the surface of the skin as well as within the deeper layers.

Sustainably Sourced

To ensure environmental sustainability, our suppliers of this extract have very clear specifications and good practices in place for a monitored harvesting of the African Mahogany Bark.

This prevents large-scale exploitation of this valuable resource and protects the ecosystem in West Africa and from Senegal to Uganda, where it grows.

Research was conducted on the African Mahogany Bark Extract in collaboration with a team in Lyon, France through in vitro and in vivo studies that demonstrated increase in collagen XVIII synthesis on skin structural properties.

Figures 1 and 2 show the results of incubation of African Mahogany Bark Extract on keratinocytes and adipocytes respectively. Both experiments show that this extract enhances the synthesis of collagen XVIII in keratinocytes and adipocytes which are key components of our skins structural content.

Figures 4 and 5 also show the investigation of African Mahogany Bark extract on the biomechanical properties of reconstructed skin which evaluates skin’s elasticity and tonicity. Both experiments showed improvements in skin elasticity as well as tonicity. Tonicity is important to skin as the more tonic skin is, the more easily it can return to its original state.

One of the most promising studies using African Mahogany Bark Extract showed significant improvements in wrinkle area and volume after topical application over 28 days.

In addition, they also found increased skin elasticity and reduction in pore size in that time compared to placebo.  Figure 6 an 7 show the results of this experiment.

Who should use skincare products with African Mahogany Bark Extract?

Anyone looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and wanting to improve the elasticity of their skin should consider products that stimulate collagen synthesis.

Our own natural collagen production starts to diminish after the age of 18 so incorporating products that encourage fibroblast activity (fibroblasts are cells that that synthesize the extracellular matrix and collagen within the human body) and the production of collagen are well-suited for most people.

Supermoon Serum is an incredible addition to any skincare routine. Not only does it contain African Mahogany Bark Extract to restore the architectural structure of the skin, but it also provides several other exciting ingredients that have shown to support cellular renewal and longevity such as a safe and gentle retinol alternative and hibiscus seed extract.
