Wash Those Hands!

Hand washing with soap and water is the best way to keep your hands germ-free! Keep reading to learn the proper technique and what to look for in a soap.

Did you know that hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of germs?

We’ve come to rely heavily on hand sanitizers, and they’re great for on-the-go protection. However, when soap and running water are available, you should always choose scrubbing!

Washing your hands is super simple and takes less than a minute. You can do it in five easy steps:

Step 1: Wet your hands under running water (the temperature doesn’t matter).
Step 2: Apply soap.
Step 3: Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds, working the soap into a nice lather. Be sure to scrub both sides of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Tip: Sing “Happy Birthday” as a fun 20 second timer.
Step 4: Rinse your hands under running water.
Step 5: Dry your hands with a clean towel.

So how does washing your hands keep you safe?

Well, the lather from the soap and the friction from rubbing your hands together help to lift dirt and germs from the skin. Rinsing under running water helps to flush all that nastiness away!

Research shows that antibacterial or antimicrobial soaps are no more effective than other soaps. What’s important is the lather and friction. I recommend choosing a soap that makes you want to wash your hands. To me, that means it doesn’t dry out my skin and has a lovely aroma.
