NOTE: No, we’re not biased just because they taste good 😋
Small but mighty.
Many of us LOVE blueberries. And I’m sure the slightly warmer weather has got you in a blueberries-craving kinda mood (understandable). They just taste so heavenly!
Blueberries are a source of nutrients that are super beneficial for our skin. Each tiny berry is jam-packed with a plethora of vitamins - ranging from superstars like vitamins A, B and C, all the way to vitamins E and K. These vitamin-rich goodies are perfect for topping your salad and granola with, not to mention they're the perfect standalone snack!
Not only do blueberries taste y-u-m-m-y and are super healthy, they also make for an amazing skincare ingredient.
So, what can blueberries do for your skin?
The beneficial properties of blueberries can be found in the form of blueberry seed oil in some of our products. This oil offers potent antioxidant properties that help to protect the skin from the effects of free radicals. In case you've forgotten, free radicals are the little troublemakers that wreak havoc on your skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. And a lot of these free radicals are produced by UV light. This is why you need antioxidants in your skincare regimen, especially in your morning skincare routine.
Even better, our blueberry seed oil helps to protect the skin by absorbing blue light.
Turns out, you not only need to protect your skin from invisible UV light, but visible light as well. And a huge portion of visible light is blue light.
Where does blue light come from? Well, most of it comes from the sun.
Now, you may think that your typical sunscreen can shield you against it. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but most sunscreens only help to protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays, leaving you vulnerable to the harmful effects of blue light.
More and more research has shown that blue light can have a negative impact on your skin. Blue light in the 380-400 nanometer range is the most harmful. And long-term exposure to blue light can seriously damage your skin. It can lead to hyperpigmentation, inflammation and weakened skin barrier function. In other words: Premature skin aging. 😱
Blueberry seed oil also promotes strong, supple, hydrated & nourished skin.
Thanks to the multitude of vitamins they possess, blueberries really are powerhouses that help to improve the condition and health of your skin. They do this by aiding collagen synthesis. And as we all know, more collagen = resilient, healthy-looking skin.
Aside from the explosion of vitamins, blueberries are also rich in protective phytosterols. These molecules do an exceptional job of protecting your skin against oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals and external pollutants. They also moisturize and soothe the skin and boost elasticity.
And that’s not all. Blueberries are also rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, all of which help to hydrate, nourish and strengthen the skin.
They are also high in linoleic acid and oleic acid. Linoleic-rich oils nourish and protect the skin, while offering hydration. Oleic acid is known to permeate the skin without disrupting the other fatty acids in your skin. It also acts as a permeability enhancer for the different nutrients present in plant oils.
So how can you incorporate blueberry seed oil into your skincare routine?
Staying true to Graydon Skincare’s belief in the power of superfoods, you'll find blueberry seed oil in two of our products.
Our blueberry seed oil is a by-product of the juicing industry using seeds that would otherwise be thrown away. 1kg of our blueberry seed oil contains the oil of 800,000 berries that have been diverted from waste. In other words: Sustainability, baby!
