And also, thank you for this wonderful question. As a former vegan chef, this topic is one I have a lot of interest in!
As you know, the food you eat can affect your skin as much as the products you put on your skin. And like skincare, diet is truly personal and varies from person to person.
Remember: A healthy diet = a happy gut microbiome = healthy, happy skin! 🥰
I’d like to share some suggestions with you to use as inspiration courtesy of our Holistic Skin Coach - Ingrid and myself.
My personal fav for good digestion is a big arugula salad. The fibre in greens feeds the good bacteria in our gut keeping them and our skin happy.
I always make sure to top off my salads with an easy-to-make dressing made from freshly squeezed lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and sea salt. Sometimes, I pour this dressing over steamed rapini, which is a bitter green that is readily available in most supermarkets.
Of course, I usually add lots of other goodies on top of my greens for extra nutrition and yumminess. But this 👆 is the basic recipe.
If you'd like, you can top your greens with with mineral-rich nuts and seeds. Minerals are not only important for optimal skin health, but hair and nail health as well! I personally love to crumble Eve’s Crackers on top of my salads. What I like about these crackers, besides the fact they’re super tasty and extremely filling, is that they’re filled with healthy fat, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals from plant based ingredients such as flax, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, and chia seeds as well as nutritional yeast and psyllium.
I also encourage you to include the rainbow in your diet, so that your skin and body will benefit from all the nutrients fruits and vegetables have to offer.
As for Ingrid, she’s a huge believer in the power of aloe vera.
She personally uses and recommends a tablespoon of food-grade aloe vera juice or gel every morning. Aloe vera juice and gel contain B vitamins and help with cellular regeneration. As a result, your skin will be able to renew itself more effectively!
Vitamin C rich fruits and veggies (strawberries and kiwis are my personal favs) are also at the top of Ingrid's list. Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis. And as you may know, collagen = firm-looking skin.
Ingrid also suggests incorporating bitter foods into your diet, such as dark leafy greens (kale, swiss chard, mustard greens, and arugula), dandelion or bitter melon. She enjoys consuming these types of foods for their ability to gently purify the blood. I know these foods might not be to everyone’s taste, but hey your skin will become healthier and happier for it!
