Why Blueberry Seed Oil is a Must-Have in Your Skincare Routine

I love blueberries! They’re the perfect salad and granola topper, not to mention they're a delicious and nutritious standalone snack! Each tiny berry is jam-packed with vitamins and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Blueberries are also renowned for their antioxidant properties.

Not only are these small but mighty berries great for your overall health, they’re also an incredible skincare ingredient! So today, let’s do a quick overview of the role that blueberries play in skincare.

What can blueberries do for your skin?

To harness the power of blueberries in skincare, oil is extracted from the blueberry seeds. This blueberry seed oil offers potent antioxidant properties that help to protect the skin from the effects of free radicals.

Quick refresher: Free radicals are little troublemakers that wreak havoc on your skin. They can cause hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles (AKA: signs of premature aging).

At Graydon Skincare, we use a blueberry seed oil that’s proven shield your skin from the damaging effects of blue light.

A lot of free radicals are produced by UV light. In 2020, researchers examined the effects of berries in skincare. Vaccinium (a plant genus that includes blueberries) was shown to reduce skin damage caused by UVA and UVB rays.

Now, I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again: This does not mean that you can skip the sunscreen in your morning skincare routine!

In addition to its powerful antioxidant properties, blueberry seed oil is also high in omega-3 and omega-6. Together, these fatty acids are known as vitamin F and they help to moisturize the skin and regulate transepidermal water loss, leaving your skin soft and hydrated.

Blue light and blueberries

We’re all familiar with the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays; however, there’s another type of light that can impact your skin. More and more research is showing that blue light also causes skin damage.

You might be surprised to learn that most blue light actually comes from the sun, but our electronic devices and LED lights also emit blue light. Unfortunately, most sunscreens only help to protect against UVA and UVB rays. This leaves your skin vulnerable to the effects of blue light.

So if sunscreen doesn’t protect against blue light, what can you do?

Well, you can look for skincare products with (you guessed it) blueberry seed oil. You know I love formulating our products with superfood ingredients, so obviously I had to include the power of blueberries in our lineup!

At Graydon Skincare, we use a blueberry seed oil called Blueberry NECTA that’s proven to absorb blue light and help shield your skin from its damaging effects. We chose this supplier because they perform rigorous testing on every batch of blueberry seed oil that they produce.

What’s even cooler? That blueberry seed oil is a by-product of the juicing industry. After 800,000 berries are juiced, the seeds (that would otherwise be thrown away) are extracted from the pulp and pressed into 1 kilogram of highly-potent blueberry seed oil. Now, that’s sustainability!

Final words

More than just a delicious snack, blueberries are tiny powerhouses of vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. Blueberry seed oil is produced when the seeds of blueberries are pressed. This nutrient-dense oil can be used in skincare ingredients.

When properly formulated, skincare products containing blueberry seed oil can do wonders for your skin. The omega-3 and omega 6 fatty acids help to moisturize the skin and slow transepidermal water loss. The powerful antioxidant properties help to neutralize free radical damage caused by UVA, UVB, and even blue light exposure. Together, all of these properties help to fight signs of aging.
